Many people are looking for a source of extra retirement income. The idea of making a lot of money through some kind of business activity plus the ability to work flexible hours is very attractive. In spite of those strong benefits, a lot of people are simply too scared to strike out on their own. In many cases they feel that they simply don’t have the means to get a business started and they don’t want to give up the “security” of their day job.

One way around this dilemma could be to start a side business on the Internet from the comfort of your own home. Something you can work on in the evenings, at the weekends, and perhaps also in the early mornings!

The advantage of starting a business on the Internet is that you can do so with little or no capital investment at all. If you have a spare room or even a free corner in your house, then you could do it. Of course, you’ll need to have a computer with an internet connection, and that requires a phone line. My guess is that you have those things already. If so, you already have the basic necessities for setting up your home business.

Once you have decided that you definitely want to set up a work from home business, ask yourself what kind of services can you offer and what skills can you bring to bear. Research your market and see if you can find a gap that you could plug with a product or range of products, or a service that you could offer.

Now, all you have to do is to get set up and start selling!

You could sell something you make yourself, or a product local to your area that other people elsewhere might want. This is a great way to get started and gives you a good chance of success. The downside to this is that you’d have to store the goods and find time to pack orders and ship them.

If you don’t want to handle the goods yourself you could try drop shipping, especially if you have little room to spare for storing goods and little time to pack and ship. One option is to sell goods on auction sites and have your drop shipper deliver them to the customer. If you choose this option, you will need to do your due diligence first to ensure that you use a reputable drop shipper. Also, ask the drop shipper to ship the goods using labels with your logo, name and address on them and not those of the drop shipper.

Another popular option for running a home-based business is affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing will provide you with the opportunity to sell either a product or a service without having to worry about handling either the goods, the shipping or money side of the operation. Also, affiliate marketing can be a great way to offer online services and digital products such as software applications, e-books and so on as well as physical products.

Once you have set up your website you can also make some extra money by posting Google Adsense or Yahoo Content Match ads. Whenever a visitor clicks on an ad you make money. The more clicks the more cash. The operators take care of all the advertising costs and placement. They also try to place appropriate ads to your page. You could do the same with Amazon books for example, and at least aim to cover the costs of your online business from the revenue you generate from your Amazon ads.

If you want to start working for yourself but don’t think you can do it because of a lack of money then you’re mistaken. If you have a computer and space to put it then you have all you need. You can also start you home business on a part time basis without giving up your job until your home business has grown sufficiently lucrative to do so without financial risk.

If you are diligent, set clear goals and stick to them, you will find that having your home business is easier than you think. All it takes is time and a commitment to succeed.
