Now that was longer ago than I care to admit but one million dollars still is very large sum of money. I have been plugging away putting what I thought was a reasonable amount into a retirement fund and purchasing the occasional stock whenever I had little extra money.

While I am no were near one million dollars I really was not that concerned. I still had several years to go before I planned on retiring and I had believed what I was always told. Invest  a certain amount of money in a certain type of fund and in twenty to thirty years you will be a millionaire.

Now according to The Street.com one million dollars will not even be enough retirement income. It seems that with inflation and the rising cost of health care (no comment) $1 million  just is not what it used to be.

As depressing as this news is it should not be a shock. According to the US Government Census the average price of a new home in 2009 was $270,000. That alone is a sizable chunk of your retirement nest egg.

So if you have not yet begun to save for retirement do so now. If you already are saving then save more.

One thing I have begun doing is planning for extra retirement income with residual income and affiliate marketing. Between the increased savings and the home based business into retirement the income streams should continue well into the golden years.
